There are two roach problems and they are not the same. German roaches breed indoors, live in the warm seams of a kitchen, and need patient baiting in the exact cracks they use: cabinet hinges, motor housings, under the sink, behind the stove. Spraying over the top of them scatters the population and can push it into the next room, so we bait and monitor instead.
The bigger roaches that turn up one at a time in a basement usually came from outside, through a floor drain, a sump pit, or a gap at the sill plate. That calls for a different approach, aimed at the entry point and the moisture that made the spot attractive. Either way we leave monitors down, so the count tells us whether the treatment is working.
