Ants are a trail problem, not a spot problem. Killing the ones you can see does nothing about the nest, so we follow the line back to where it enters the house, work out which ant we are dealing with, and use bait the workers carry home when that is what the situation calls for. Carpenter ants get a closer look, because they usually mean damp wood somewhere.
Spiders are mostly a symptom. They stay where there is something to catch, so we clear webs and egg sacs from eaves, window wells, and basement corners, then treat the insects they were living on. Expect activity to fall off over a couple of weeks rather than overnight, and expect us to point out the damp corner or the gap under a door that keeps drawing them in.
